Access to water

Every day, SHRI sells hundreds of bottles of clean water at the lowest possible price of 25-50 paise/liter (market price being Rs.1-2/liter in order to cover the expenses for O&M of its facilities. Due to increasing water sales, we have been able to focus our water production mainly in two villages: Majhol in Bihar and Basgoda in Jharkhand. This has made it more important than ever to continually collect data on our water sales. We have SHRI employees on the ground working to constantly keep us, and you, informed.

Enhancing the access to safe sanitation and hygiene

SHRI’s 14 facilities were used more than 6,000 times per day in 2023. This means that overall, they were used more than 2 million times throughout the year. Further, they were usable 99% of the time, which is an amazing achievement, made possible only because of our committed and dedicated efforts of all facility staff. The operational cost of maintaining these high-quality sanitation facilities was $0.02 per use (Rs. 1.6 per use), which is not transferred to users and thus has no provision of user fees. This is because SHRI believes in guaranteeing the right to access high-quality sanitation facilities for everyone everywhere.

Employment

To operate these toilets, SHRI hires fair-wage staff who are trained to clean and maintain each facility. Staff uploads daily data on quality and use to SHRI’s public online dashboard. This dashboard is used by SHRI staff and managers to guide operations and by funders and policy makers to analyze facility performance.
